Win in Perthshire puts Reds within touching distance of promotion!

By

Seven tries scored in comprehensive victory.

Newton Stewart RFC travelled to Perthshire last weekend to continue their bid for promotion as the league season reaches its climax.
The home side got the upper hand early doors when they set up a rolling maul from 20 metres out and bulldozed their way downfield and over the try line for a 5-0 lead.
Keeping their cool Newton Stewart collected the ball from the restart and set about getting straight back into the game. When the referee blew up for a penalty a few minutes later centre Fraser Morton (captain) took the three point to reduce the deficit.
Within minutes opportunity came knocking once again and this time Russell Morton (inside centre) scored a try with brother Fraser converting to make it 5-10.
The Morton brothers’ show continued when Russell got another try within five minutes to extend the Red lead further. Winger Liam Brawls created the move with a powerful break, passing inside to Morton for the score.
Hooker Thomas MacDonald demonstrated impressive pace and a great step to beat several defenders on a charge upfield with twenty minutes played. Brawls was on there on the receiving end of the pass this time to run in the try which Fraser Morton converted.
Perthshire had a spell of possession now and forced Newton Stewart to revert to defensive mode. The home side pushed the Reds right back onto their own try line, but couldn’t find any way through, and the first half finished with back row Alan Ferrie making a superb break before putting James Wallace in for the bonus point try. Half-time score 5-29.
The second half began as the first had done – with a score for the home side. Perthshire put good pressure on the Newton Stewart line and ultimately worked their way over from close range for a converted try.
Just five minutes later however, the Reds countered. Winger David Adams scored a try in the corner when full-back Jamie Muir drew the last man to create space. Fraser Morton converted once again to make it 12-36 with twenty minutes to play.
Martin Wallace, returning from injury, put a well-timed pass in to MacDonald and the hooker charged onto the ball and upfield before finding Muir on his outside to score the next try.
Russell Morton got his hat-trick in the far corner in the dying minutes of the game, his brother converting once again.
The last word went to Perthshire however with an unconverted try right on full-time for a final scoreline of 17-48.
This was a comprehensive victory for the Reds and an important one at this late stage of the season. With only two games remaining in the league Newton Stewart still sit ten points clears of third place with a significant points difference advantage. This means that the Reds are almost guaranteed promotion to National League Division 2 next season, although upset is theoretically possible if some extreme scorelines come in to play.
Man of the Match in this game was back row Calum Gaw. He provided an important link between the forwards and the back line and used his speed and impressive foot work to wreak havoc with the ball in hand. A superb performance.
This weekend will see Newton Stewart play host to local rivals Carrick RFC for the final home game of this season. A win will concrete promotion to the league above – a best-ever standing for the Reds should it be achieved. The club looks forward to welcoming a big crowd to Bladnoch Park on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.
